It's how you tell the story.
The true story is of a rich woman who beats her servants until they fight back. The true story casts doubt on the incestuous relationship. But this version of the story leaves out the beatings, reducing it to verbal abuse and threats. This version makes the incest explicit.
This version demonizes the servants.
This version doesn't make their boss relatable or sympathetic, but it leaves out the part where she bashed their heads against the wall, and it instead depicts the working women as depraved, incestuous, and violent. It demonizes them, mental illness, and queerness (equating it with incest and mental illness).
It's otherwise not a bad film.

I love nearly everything about this fine film. Even when there’s not much going on, it’s filled with unbelievable tension and atmosphere. It also feels very real, thanks to the naturalistic approach it employs for the most part. The acting is uniformly great, with Joely Richardson giving an especially commendable performance and Julie Walters nicely playing out her unintentionally sinister character. And that powerful final sequence is just pure gold -- one of the most frightening things I’ve ever seen: everything from the acting to the lighting to the instrumental score is all perfect in it.
It’s highly interesting that while lesbian incest is what it is most known for, the film actually comes down to class struggle: the sisters…

Thinking about this in contrast to Portrait of a Lady on Fire; how in Sciamma's film the lack of onscreen men creates space for a domestic idyll where the class and power barriers between 'mistress' and 'maid' start to erode, leaving a place of feminine safety and solidarity, however impermanent it might be.
Sister My Sister, then, is the polar opposite of that, with rigid structures of power and control at play in the relationships between the films' four women – employer and servant, mother and daughter, oldest and youngest, mother's favourite and mother's surrogate, breadwinner and beloved – the all-female household giving genesis to something jealous and festering; insular and cruel. My fourth year doing this project (although my second in a row doing it in 52 days) follows on from my 30 countries project nicely to continue the theme of films directed by women.
That one may have finished on an expected high with Portrait of a Lady on Fire but this one doesn't really start off on a similar footing, unfortunately.

What if I told you this movie was based on a true story about incestuous lesbian French Maid sister murderers?
What if I also told you this is one of the most dull movies I've seen this year?
Given the subject matter, this has the potential to be a f*cking dark and demented movie that goes balls to the wall f*cked up. Remake this and give it to a modern day filmmaker who doesn't give a f*ck and let em go wild and this could be a masterpiece.
