We struggled with our Westie for 12/15 months with her skin issues , she lost her fur , her zest for life . We had fed her on an organic diet with raw food , we persevered for all this time , but decided with support of vet to put her on Hills ZD , she has now been on this for past 5 months and thank fully she is back to full fur, fitness , and is like a puppy ( she is 11 years old ) . Everything appears to be going well so fingers 🫰🏻🫰🏻🫰🏻

Finally, a special food my dog will eat.
Verified Purchase
By Felicity Foulis Brown on 9 June 2024
This is the first prescription dog food for sensitivities that my dog will actually eat - in fact, he likes it! I've bought two different special brands (at great expense) previously, which he simply wouldn't touch, and this was a last-ditch attempt. Heis supposed to have it for a limited period only, but it's encouraging.

My dog won't eat it...
Verified Purchase
By Valeria Dorola on 23 May 2024
It might be good for them, but apparently the taste might be quite bitter as my dog won't eat it. The eats (not too keenly) the dry option, but only if it completely dry. As soon as I add a couple of drops of water, he leaves it on the plate.

Allergy Foods
Verified Purchase
By Lesley’ Rawson on 31 March 2024
I bought this to trial for my dog as he has rhinitis the animal hospital suggested we try him on Hills zd to see if it’s food causing this. I’m particularly pleased there are dog treats as well because he won’t feel he’s missing out.Jack enjoys this food and never leaves a drop. We mix feed the biscuit meal with a small amount of the tinned. It make his stools firm if not a bit dark in colour.
Jack’s been on this for a month now it’s hard to say if food allergies are the cause of his rhinitis his symptoms have reduced slightly so we are going to keep going for now.

Suspected IBD
Geraldine Byrne
My three-year-old boxer has suspected IBD. He’s had an ultrasound which didn’t reveal much apart from thickening in small intestine. Biles up virtually every morning and feels so sick but then ok and fit rest of day. I’ve tried every food imaginable from Royal canin an allergenic to Royal canin Gastro low-fat. These are not working. I’ve tried boiled turkey and rice. Would this food have any hope of working? I’m at my wits end!

This is an anallergenic diet which means it cannot set off a food allergy in your dog. Royal Canin Anallergenic is a similar diet and so if you have not seen an improvement on this then a food allergy component may not be contributing to the IBD. It is important to note though that to perform a good food trial to see if food allergies are an issue you need to feed an anallergenic diet like this as the only food for 8 weeks, without any treats or scavenging in that time. If the signs improve over the 8 weeks then food is very likely a contributing factor and you should consider lifelong anallergenic diets like Hills Z/D or Royal Canin Anallergenic.
It is advised to discuss the issue further with your vet if food is not helping, prescription medications or further tests to confirm the cause may be needed.

Hills wet dog food

I give my dog. hills Z/D digestive dry food, which he is really well on and was recommended by the vet. Would I be able to mix this with the same wet food as a change for him?
Dr. Nick Garside BVetMed MRCVS
- VioVet Staff
Yes the Hills Z/D dry and wet food have the same intended effect, if your vet has advised the dry version then there is no reason you cannot use the wet version too.

Is this good for my dog with food allergies and itching paws

This food is a hydrolysed protein anallergenic diet, meaning it cannot set off your dog's food allergies if there are any present. It should be used only alongside veterinary advice though. It's important to systematically rule out the cause of your dog's allergies under vet guidance. Diets like this must be fed for 6 to 8 weeks minimum as the only food (no treats/scavenging) to determine if it is appropriate.
