LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Four people were arrested Friday after an hours-long standoff at a Lincoln home, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says.
Several authorities were sent to the home near 12th and Hill Streets around 7:30 a.m. to serve an arrest warrant for 24-year-old Gabriel Olivas.
Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said Olivas had five active arrest warrants and a history of violence.
Houchin said Lincoln Police were also looking for him after a robbery that took place on Wednesday near 21st and Washington streets.
On top of that, Olivas had also struck an unmarked police vehicle and drove off Thursday night, according to Houchin.
After authorities arrived and surrounded the area, about seven to eight people exited the home, Houchin said.
But Olivas and two others barricaded themselves inside, and authorities were worried that they were armed.
Authorities tried calling for Olivas to come out of the home, but he refused.
“He would not make any contact with us, nothing was said, and we could not communicate with him,” Houchin said.
Eventually, 44-year-old Arthur Francis – who also had a warrant out for his arrest – came out of the house and was taken into custody.
Houchin said Francis would not tell authorities who else was inside.
Eventually, they used a chemical agent.
Olivas tried to escape onto the roof but was arrested after coming down, according to Houchin.
Shortly after, 39-year-old Sherry Thomas – who also had an active arrest warrant – came out of the home and was taken into custody.
One neighbor, Brian Wilson, said it was “a little bit frightening” to see something like this happen in his neighborhood.
“There’s been a lot of past issues with that house,” he said. “We’ve seen police there several times. There’s been complaints from neighbors about garbage in the yard and people in the house yelling at neighbors as they walk by.”
After the standoff, authorities searched the home and found a handgun, meth and drug-related items.
Among those who came out when deputies arrived were 32-year-old Jennifer Crumley and her 18-month-old child.
After the search, deputies arrested Crumley on suspicion of felony child abuse.
Houchin says the child has been placed in protective custody.
“We are thankful that nobody got injured, suspects or law enforcement,” he said. “We’re glad that eventually they did come out and everybody is safe.”
