ingredients
1 package (15-18 ounce size) yellow cake mix
3 eggs
1 can (16 ounce size) applesauce
directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a tube or Bundt pan.
Combine the yellow cake mix and eggs in a mixing bowl. Beat on low speed with an electric mixer for 1-2 minutes or until smooth. Stir in the applesauce.
Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking pan.
Place the cake in the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 30-40 minutes or until done.
Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Invert the pan onto a platter and remove the cake from the pan. Let cool completely. Dust the applesauce cake with cinnamon sugar if desired.
recipe tips
Mix in a teaspoon of vanilla extract or cinnamon into the batter for added flavor.
To prevent the cake from sticking, dust the greased pan with flour or use a non-stick baking spray.
For a healthier version, use an unsweetened applesauce and a low-sugar cake mix.
If the cake is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil during the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
Test the cake for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
Let the cake cool completely before slicing to prevent it from falling apart.
Garnish with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of caramel sauce for a sweet topping.
Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Try adding chopped nuts or raisins to the batter.
Always preheat the oven for the best baking results.
common recipe questions
Can I use a different flavor of cake mix?

What can I use instead of eggs?

Is there a substitute for canned applesauce?
Homemade applesauce can be used, or you can substitute with mashed bananas for a different flavor.
How do I store and keep the cake?
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer storage.
Can this cake be frozen?
Yes, it can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Can I use canned pumpkin instead of the applesauce?

CDKitchen Staff Reply:
We haven't tested the recipe that way but it would be worth trying. Note that canned pumpkin is usually more dense than applesauce so you may need to add some liquid. Let us know if you try it!

July 3, 2013I was shocked at how simple this recipe was and that it turned out so good! Lower fat too since you're not adding the oil that you usually add with cake mix.
